Love, After Taking a Breath and Entering Back In
This month I am sending you a song of LOVE that starts in a BLIZZARD of "nothing but white" and celebrates what it means to keep on reminding ourselves to REACH FORWARD, even when we find ourselves pulling back from love and connection. Read on to learn the story.
TOPIC: A Song That Invites You to See Life All Around You, Anew
What Would Happen if You Dared to Rise?
I once heard a woman speak, and what she had to say was so powerful that it it instantaneously and dramatically changed almost everything about the way I eat, that very day. And I have deeply, meaningfully stayed with this shift, two full years later.
Not long after that, I was asked by this same woman to partner with her to create a song that honors the Unitarian Universalist principal, "Honor All Beings." It took longer for me to write this song than any song I have ever written in my life - months and months and months.
But from the moment it was finally created, this song started spreading to new places. It made its way all the
TOPIC: A support song for inner city girls
I have become rather transfixed with a non-profit organization that teaches at-risk girls to find their voice, to step forward from a centered and considered place, and to believe in themselves anew. The organization is called Girls' LEAP, and it very specifically helps girls develop a diverse set of responses to violence, beyond the extremes of passivity and escalation. Every time I get near any kind of LEAP event, I find something astonishing happening. And I find tears welling up in me, in response to it.

A SONG IN CELEBRATION OF THE SELF!
I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the way this uplifting, self-affirming song turned out! Please share this song with anyone who is good at celebrating themselves--or anyone who wants to get better at celebrating themselves.
TOPIC: Gift to therapist. Learning not to abandon ourselves
How do we go about honoring those mentors who have played a powerful role in our lives?
And what happens when we learn to more deeply honor ourselves?
THE ASSIGNMENT: LOOKING AT ABANDONMENT ISSUES THROUGH A NEW LENS
Every once in awhile I get a call from someone who has discovered my site, discovered my songs, and is just absolutely, positively ready to go...NOW! That was Dawn. She had been doing some significant therapeutic work with a highly competent therapist, Sandra, and she wanted to find a way to mark her progress, and offer up a special kind of thanks to Sandra. She also wanted a way to encourage herself forward into a fuller expression of who she was becoming, through therapy. "Maybe you could write the song," Dawn suggested, "in the voice of a future version of me."

TOPIC: 50th birthday song
This month we are turning our focus to Laura. Laura gave herself an incredible 50th Birthday Present.
She commissioned a song to celebrate the serene and centered place she was coming to in her 50th year. And, as always, there's a twist.
Due to a devastating accident, Laura has been in a wheelchair for the entirety of her adult life. You'd never know it to talk with her on the phone or sense how she comes across over the internet. And in fact, she asked, when I created her song, that it not be "all about that." Because SHE is not "all about that." But we did work this harsh and, ultimately, rather defining turning point, into the video that my sister-in-law, Anne, created for you for this Song-of-the-Month. We did so not in an attempt to "make it all about that," but as a way of helping to share and amplify the wonder of Laura and her journey, which has inspired me deeply.
